Heisman Nominees To Be Determined

NFL News - September 23rd, 2009 - Written by John

heismanTim Tebow's streak of 30 consecutive games with a touchdown was snapped last week against Tennessee, but is still the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, according to DSI. But his unremarkable performance, turning the ball over twice and only accounting for one score, allowed several others to jump into the picture. Cal running back Javid Best, who has probably the best chance of any non-quarterback, torched Minnesota last Saturday for 131 yards and five touchdowns. He now has 469 total yards on the season and, with an elite class of quarterbacks on his heels, will desperately need a win against Oregon to keep his hopes alive. With Sam Bradford out of the picture, Colt McCoy is probably the top competition for Tebow. He struggled in a win against Texas Tech, but that will hardly be relevant after his October 17 meeting against Oklahoma.

And don't forget about Jimmy Clausen, who has a perfect 9/0 touchdown-to-interception ratio in three games with the Fighting Irish. He remains a legitimate dark-horse for the award.

Of all the contenders that suffered a loss last week, nobody was hit harder than Max Hall. Yes, he threw for over 300 yards against the Seminoles, but he turned it over three times and BYU never really got close. Heisman voters covet records, probably more than gawdy stats, and he will need a lot of help from the other quarterbacks to sneak back in the picture.
